Story Evolution. How to use songs to inspire your writing – Part 2: Crisis

Diana Krall – Temptation

“Temptation I can’t resist..”

“I know he is full of smoke…but I have lost my way.”

“My will has disappeared, now confusion is all so clear.”

This song is perfect for the build up to the first sex scene – the heroine is fed up with everyone controlling her life. The Hero’s sudden presence both tempts and confuses her.

The lyric’s in Love Me Like A Man also sum up the motivation for the Heroine – she needs someone to love her – love her like a man. Heart, body and soul

The crisis, or rather the conflict is, that by allowing herself to be swept up in the passion they both feel for each other Ashley is torn between two completing needs: the first is the  need for safety (that marrying a man who family approves of, and thus securing land that has been in her family for generations). The second is the need for love. Deep, passionate, heart-stirring love. Something she is not convinced Jake is able to provide or motivated to give.

Jake too, feels conflicted. At stake is his personal quest for a rare and elusive butterfly. One which when captured will boost his ego incredibly – hence satisfying the need to achievement but conflicting which the need for love that Ashley has laid bare and which he can no longer deny. High stakes indeed.

The lyrics from Paolo Nutini’s wonderful track “Loving you,” hint at this raising internal conflict. Ashley must leave her morals at the door – a struggle for an internal people pleaser who is afraid of abandonment. Jake, on the other hand, must let go of the independent, aloof streak that gives rise to his loneliness and they both must follow where their heart wants to go.

This song by Seal powerfully illustrates how Ashley and Jake are destined to be together yet due to her circumstances must remain a secret
